Here’s what you need to stay safe in the pool

If you’re a pool owner, the expression “safety first” is more than an idiom; it should be a way of life. Swimming pools can be the ultimate source of fun, but they also require safety measures to prevent tragedies. Various safety precautions and measures – like covers, alarms, and protocols – will help you keep your friends and family safe. Here are our tips:

Maintain heightened awareness

When friends and family come over for festivities around the pool, it’s easy to get distracted. This distraction can be extremely dangerous when kids are in or around the pool. That’s why we recommend explicitly designating an adult as responsible for keeping an eye on what’s happening in the pool rather than relying on the adults present. Assigning the responsibility means someone is in charge and accountable at all times.

Cover your pool

When your pool isn’t in use, keeping it covered is a simple way to prevent anyone from falling or wandering into the water. That’s why we think investing in a pool cover is one of the most important and efficient ways to keep your pool safe. Pool covers provide a physical barrier that can safely keep kids out of the pool. There is a wide variety of pool covers on the market at every price point and style and keeping your pool covered will definitely help you sleep better.

Get a pool alarm

Similar to home security alarms, pool alarms are an excellent way to alert you when there is unexpected activity in your pool. Surface wave detection pool alarms use a sensor to detect waves. Subsurface detection pool alarms take a different approach and use a sensor that is located on the floor of your swimming pool, which is triggered by changes in water pressure. Whichever you choose, pool alarms are an easy and affordable layer of added protection.

Install barriers

Installing physical barriers around your pool is another effective safety measure that protects kids and pets. Just be sure that physical barriers are high enough (at minimum 4 feet) to keep kids out. If you live in the US, be sure to check local laws – in some cities, you may be required to install a safety fence if your pool meets certain criteria.

Have safety equipment and first aid nearby

Be sure to keep safety equipment like rings and hooks close by in case of emergency. In addition, keep a first aid kit stocked with all the essentials easily accessible.

Learn CPR

Knowing basic CPR and staying up to date on your certification is a good life skill, especially when it comes to pool safety. CPR certification is inexpensive and offered in many locations around the world.

Teach your kids how to swim

Teaching your kids how to swim is an important step in making them more comfortable around the water and reducing the risks associated with owning a swimming pool. Swimming classes also provide kids with a great social and physical activity that they can practice years into adulthood.
